My computer freezes when I insert a USB device

"Almost every time (not always, but like 90% of the times) I plug in my USB flash drive or MP3 player to my computer, it just hangs. This has been bugging me for a while now, and to be honest, it's quite annoying. If anyone has any idea what the issue might be and could suggest a solution, I would be very grateful. Thank you."

A frozen computer after inserting a USB drive is a common issue. In fact, it often occurs when the USB drive or the USB port driver is corrupted. Before you take drastic measures, try these two quick solutions first.

Try connecting the USB drive to a different USB port on your computer. Check if the same issue occurs when you connect the drive to another computer.

If the above methods don't work, you can try the following solution ( applicable to Windows 11/10/7) to fix the issue:

Method 1: Check the Partition with a Free Tool

You can use the free partition manager tool - tools Partition Master Free to easily check your partition.

Step 1. Launch AOMEI Partition Assistant on your computer. Then, right-click the disk and choose “Advanced” > “Check File System”.

Select "Check Partition": choose Check Partition

<Step 2> In the Check Disk Utility dialog box, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.

Check the prompt that pops up

Step 3: The program will now check the partition's file system on the disk. When it's done, click "Finish".

Finish the check The partition check is completeThe partition check is complete

Method 2: Uninstall and Reinstall the USB Driver

1. Start by searching for "Device Manager" and double-clicking to open it.

2. In Device Manager, expand the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" option, right-click on "Host Controller," select "Uninstall," and then click "OK."

3. Look for an exclamation point next to the driver, which indicates there's a problem with the installed driver.

4. Repeat Step 2 to uninstall all items under “Universal Serial Bus controllers.”

5. After that, restart your computer, and Windows 11/10/7 will automatically reinstall all USB controllers.

Tip
You need to unplug all USB devices and then perform the above steps. After doing that, open Disk Management and check if your USB drive is listed there. If it's showing in the Disk Management window, try to open it and move all the files out of the drive (if you can access it). If it's not showing, refer to this guide on how to fix a USB flash drive not showing up in Windows 10/8/7.
