On this page, you will learn how to change or set partition type ID on Windows 10/8/7 PC and laptop with the diskpart command. To change partition type ID on dynamic disk, you must convert dynamic disk to basic disk first before proceeding. In this case, Partition Master is your preferred tool. Read on and you can get all information about partition type ID.

What is "Partition Type ID"?

Are you familiar with the term "partition type"? How about "partition type ID"? First, there are five main types of partitions: [1] Primary Partition, [2] EFI System Partition, [3] Extended Partition, [4] Logical Partition, and [5] Microsoft Reserved (MSR) Partition. Now, a partition type ID is a byte value that specifies the file system contained within the partition or a special access method used when accessing the partition. In simple terms, the partition type ID is often used to indicate which operating systems can recognize and use the partition, with some of it denoting attributes of the file system type.

If you're interested, here are some commonly used partition type IDs for both MBR and GPT partitions. Knowing the value of this field can help you set the partition type ID explicitly.

For MBR partitions, the type field is a hexadecimal value like this:

    < li > 0x01 FAT12< /li > < li > 0x04 FAT16, volume less than 32MB< /li > < li > 0x06 FAT16, volume greater than 32MB< /li > < li > 0x07 NTFS< /li > < li > 0x0B FAT32, used by DOS and Win95< /li > < li > 0x0C access a FAT32 partition with LBA mode< /li > < li > 0x0E access a FAT16 partition with LBA mode< /li >

For GPT partitions, the type field's value is a long string, as shown here:

    • EFI System Partition: c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b
    • Basic Data Partition: ebd0a0a2-b9e5-4433-87c0-68b6b72699c7
