There are countless tutorials online on how to repair a damaged USB flash drive without losing data. But have you ever searched for ways to destroy a USB drive? Sometimes, people need to get rid of USB drives they no longer use and want to make sure no one else can use the drive or retrieve information from it. They wonder how to damage a USB drive on purpose.
Please do not attempt to destroy the flash drive that is supposed to hold your homework or any other assigned work in order to pretend that you left it at home.
By "destroy," we mean both the physical device and the data it contains! A damaged USB drive is one that has been made unusable by human or third-party hard drive destruction software. Whatever method you choose, the end goal is to make it "disappear." In other words, it should no longer be recognizable by Windows computers, Macs, PlayStations, TVs, or any other digital devices. Damage can be either visible or invisible.
1. The flash drive shows signs of physical damage:
2. Other signs of a corrupted USB drive:
Hammer, drill, water, microwave, or freezer? Wait – do you want to physically destroy the USB drive, or just temporarily disable it? If you still want the USB drive in working order, don't use excessive force. Otherwise, simply smashing it with a hammer or drowning it in water to corrode it permanently should be easy enough without my help.
However, note that some might recommend putting it in the microwave to heat it up. Do not do this, or you could end up damaging your microwave along with the flash drive! It is unsafe to burn electronic devices or items containing metal.
Based on my understanding from various forums like Reddit and Quora, many people searching for how to damage a flash drive actually don't intend to physically harm it; instead, they want to make it appear as if it's damaged. Does your inquiry have the same implication?
For most non-tech-savvy users, when they are unable to open a flash drive or the drive is not found after connecting it, they assume that it's a damaged drive. While the wise would look up numerous troubleshooting guides and attempt to fix it to make it usable again.
The Windows DiskPart command-line utility can help resolve most issues with hard drives, partitions, volumes, and virtual disks on your computer. It can fix hardware and software problems and also help you wipe out a hardware device as if it never existed, leaving your flash drive showing as an inaccessible drive and usually accompanied by a severe error message.
If your ultimate goal is to make the USB drive appear as if it's currently damaged and unusable, apply the following command instead:
Step 1: Connect the flash drive to your computer. Open Command Prompt as an administrator by pressing Windows + X.
Step 2. Enter each command, one at a time, as they appear in the box. Press Enter after typing each line.
diskpart
list disk
select disk 1
clean
In the “Select Disk 1” step, replace the number 1 with the correct number of your disk. You can determine which number is your flash drive by its size (capacity).
The CMD method might make your USB unopenable, and the data on it inaccessible. However, once someone fixes the USB, the data could be recovered – at least by experts. So, how can you wipe the data so that it's never accessible again? You'll have to rely on third-party HDD or SSD wiping software for this.
By using a powerful partition magic tool like Partition Master, you can perform multiple strong wipes (over 10 times) on the flash drive. With a powerful and effective wipe, your flash drive will suddenly disappear from your computer, along with your data. So far, no data recovery tool or expert has been able to retrieve data from a wiped-out flash drive.
Step 1: Connect the external device to your computer. Right-click on it and select "Wipe Disk."
Step 2. Set the number of times you want the data erased (up to 10). Click “OK.”
Step 3: Click Run 1 Task, and then click Apply.
After wiping USB flash drive with Partition Master, it won't show up in Windows Explorer again after connecting because it becomes unallocated space. And, the data on it cannot be recovered.
