I need to move some applications, like Adobe CS6, Microsoft Office and iTunes, from my XP system to a new Windows 7 machine. What's the easiest way? I know I can transfer data via a USB drive to another computer, but what about large programs? Will they run on the new machine if I just move them over with USB?

Buying a new computer means setting it up just the way you had your old one – which, as many people complain, involves reinstalling all those big programs. You might ask: “Can't I just transfer the programs from my old computer to the new one?”

In this article, we recommend three ways to transfer programs from one computer to another.

Transfer the program using a data transfer software

As mentioned above, the hardest part when replacing a computer or upgrading to a new system is reinstalling software on the new PC. While Microsoft offers the Windows Easy Transfer tool to help move your settings, music, photos, videos, and email, it doesn't transfer applications. Todo PCTrans Pro, on the other hand, is user-friendly PC migration software that can transfer an unlimited number of applications, files, and user settings from one computer to another.

1. Through a "computer-to-computer" transfer program

Step 1: Launch the Todo PCTrans tool on both the source and target computers and connect the two PCs via the internet.

1. Under PC to PC, choose the transfer direction, and then click Start to continue.

Select PC to PC Transfer

2. Select your target computer by its name, then enter your account password or verification code. Click “Connect” to proceed.

The verification code appears in the upper-right corner of the main "PC to PC" screen on the controlled computer.

Step 2: Choose the Apps, Files, and Accounts you want to transfer over the Internet.

To transfer data selectively, tap Edit under each category, and then select specific items.

Select apps, files, or accounts: select applications, files or accounts

Click the “Transfer” button to start transferring your apps/files/accounts over the Internet from one computer to another.

2. Move programs to another PC via "Backup and Restore"

If you have an external hard drive, you can use it to transfer software between computers. This method requires downloading the tool Todo PCTrans. You'll use its “Backup and Restore” feature to move programs to the external hard drive.

Steps:

Download the Todo PCTrans tool on both computers. On the old computer: Choose “Backup & Restore” > “**Data Backup**” > select to back up the program to an external hard drive. On the new computer: Connect the external hard drive to the new computer > choose “**Data Restore**” > select a backup file > click “**Restore**”.

How to Transfer Programs Manually to a New Computer

First off, let me say that this is a more complicated way of transferring programs from one computer to another. If you have the time, it can certainly work. The methods we'll discuss in this section involve online transfers and physical devices. The size of the program you're transferring will depend on your device.

1. Move the program to your computer via cloud storage (OneDrive)

Step 1: Upload the file to OneDrive.

Open the OneDrive app and tap “Upload” to add your files.

Download the program files onto the new computer.

Run your OneDrive app on the new computer, and then choose Download to get your files.

Use Cloud Drive

2. Use File History to transfer files to a new computer

If you backed up your files to an external hard drive using File History, you can restore them on your new PC.

Step one: Connect the external hard drive to the new computer.

Step 2: Type “Control Panel” in the search box, open it > Click on “File History” > Select “Restore my files”.

Step 3. Select the file you want, then click the green button.

3. Cross-over cable

Another physical device is a crossover cable, which you can use to transfer software to another computer.

Caution:
Cross-over cables are not the same as straight-through cables. Make sure to use the correct cable.

Steps:

1. Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.

2. Select the appropriate connection (Ethernet) > Right-click the connection > Select Properties.

3. In the Network window, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) > Properties.

4. Set the IP address and subnet mask.

5. Plug the crossover cable into the network ports on both computers.

6. Right-click the drive you want to share, select [Properties] > [Sharing] > [Advanced Sharing] > [Share this folder] > [Apply].

Transferring a program from one computer to another (Windows to Mac)

You can also move programs from Windows to a Mac. Apple provides the Migration Assistant to help you transfer information to another computer.

Steps:

1. Download Migration Assistant for Windows from Apple > Press Enter to open it on your computer > Continue

2. On your Mac, open Migration Assistant > Migration window > “Choose from a Windows PC” > “Continue.”

3. Click Source Computer > Enter administrator name and password.

When the same password is entered, the clock continues.

5. The “Migration Assistant” on your Mac will scan your PC's disk. When the scan is finished, you can transfer your programs to the new computer.
