As of April 2014, Microsoft ended support for Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 will follow suit in July 2015. Users who still rely on these operating systems need to migrate their data, services, and paid programs to a newer OS. A typical backup method is to save your data to a local network or USB hard drive. If you're planning to upgrade to a more recent system like Windows 7, 10, 11, or Server 2008, 2012, Windows Easy Transfer can be an efficient choice for moving settings and data. Windows Easy Transfer supports the transfer of settings and data but not desktop applications. In this case, you might want to try a tool like Todo PCTrans – a dedicated tool for migrating both data and programs.
It works great for transferring files, documents, music, photos, and settings between systems when upgrading from Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 to Windows 8. However, it's not so easy for Windows 8.1 users, and, in fact, we still don't have any official word on why it fails to migrate data to or from Windows 8.1. There aren't any comments or feedback yet on whether Windows Easy Transfer will work with Windows 10.
While some insist on using Windows Easy Transfer to move your important files and settings, considering Windows 8.1 and the apps, I highly recommend you use Todo PCTrans, which can quickly and safely transfer your files and applications from Windows XP to Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10.
PC Transfer software, such as PCTrans Pro, offers direct and indirect methods to migrate files and applications from Windows XP to Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11. You can directly move photos, documents, movies, and programs via "Connected Network," or create a backup file through "Compressed File."
Step 1: Launch Todo PCTrans on both computers. Select the "PC to PC" option to proceed.
Step 2: Make sure you have selected the correct transfer direction.
"New" - Transfer data from an old computer to the current new one.
"Old" - Move data from your current old computer to a new one remotely.
Step 3: Enter the password or the verification code of the target computer to connect the two computers via the network. Make sure you have selected the correct transfer direction, then click "Connect" to proceed.
The captcha is located in the upper-right corner of the “Computer to Computer” main screen on the controlled computer.
Step 4: Next, click "Files" and select the files you want to transfer. Choose specific files as needed. Additionally, you can click on the "Edit" icon to customize the destination folder for your transferred data.
5. Click “Transfer” to start sending the file from your computer to the other one. The time this takes will depend on the size of the file, so be patient.
The second method is by using the “Backup and Restore” feature, a simple and user-friendly free tool offered by Todo PCTrans that lets you back up your files/applications and restore them.
Step 1: Create a backup file.
1. Connect the USB (flash) drive/external hard drive to the source computer. Launch Todo PCTrans and click Start on the main screen under Backup & Restore.
2. Tap Data Backup to continue.
3. Hover over the “Apps,” “Files,” and “Accounts” columns, select the specific data, apps, etc. that you want, and click “Backup” to create your backup file.
Step 2. Restore from the backup you just made
1. Insert the USB drive containing the backup files into the target computer.
Make sure that Todo PCTrans is installed on the target computer. Open PCTransImage, and then double-click the backup file. Otherwise, click PCTrans_setup.exe to install this tool.
2. Now, you can choose the app/file/account you want to recover. Tap on “Restore”.
3. Wait a moment, then click “OK” to complete the restore process.
